Istikhara for Marriage: How to Pray It and Read the Signs
Written for British Muslims living in the UK
Istikhara for marriage is a two rakat prayer followed by a specific dua asking Allah to make a proposed marriage easy if it is good for you and to turn it away if it is not. You pray it after doing your own research and consultation, then proceed and watch whether the matter becomes easier or harder. A dream is not required.

What is istikhara?
Istikhara means seeking what is good. The Prophet, peace be upon him, taught his companions to pray it for every important decision, and choosing a spouse is one of the biggest decisions a Muslim makes. It is an act of trust: you do your part, then ask Allah to guide the outcome.
How to pray istikhara for marriage
Make wudu, pray two voluntary rakat with the intention of istikhara, then recite the istikhara dua, mentioning the marriage to this specific person where the dua refers to "this matter". You can repeat it over several days if you remain unsure.
- Make wudu and pray two rakat of nafl
- Recite the istikhara dua after the prayer
- Name the marriage proposal in your heart or words
- Continue taking practical steps afterwards
Understanding the outcome
Many people wait for a dream, but scholars explain that the answer is usually seen in how events unfold. If meetings go smoothly, families agree and your heart is at peace, that is a good sign. If obstacles keep appearing, that may be Allah turning it away. Either outcome is good for you.
Istikhara and consultation (shura)
Istikhara is not a replacement for getting to know someone. Meet in a halal way, ask the important questions, and consult people you trust, such as parents, a wali or an imam. Our list of questions to ask before marriage is a good place to start.
A halal first meeting is often the moment people pray istikhara. With Halal Date you meet over dinner, lunch or coffee at a public UK venue, the gentleman always pays, and you can then pray istikhara with a real impression of the person rather than a profile.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone else pray istikhara for me?
The sunnah is for the person making the decision to pray it themselves. Others can make general dua for you.
How many times should I pray istikhara?
Once is enough, but you may repeat it over several days if you are still unsure.
Do I need a dream after istikhara?
No. A dream is not required. Look at whether the matter becomes easier or harder and how settled your heart feels.
Can I pray istikhara during my period?
A woman who cannot pray can still recite the istikhara dua without the two rakat.
